In collaboration with Ben Yuan we designed sustainable packaging for refillable beeswax candles aimed at addressing wasteful industry practices and enhancing reusability. Our research examined existing candle brands, material options, environmental impacts, and circular design strategies. The final product is a cylindrical glass and wood wick that eliminates unnecessary secondary packaging and can be returned to the store for discounted refills. A dynamic QR code links customers to sustainability information about the brand and can be scanned by staff to apply the refill discount. The design is comfortable to hold, stable on flat surfaces, and allows the candle’s wick to be visible for ease of use. It incorporates principles such as product-as-a-service, product life extension, a closed-loop system, and smart material choices, resulting in a functional, attractive, and environmentally responsible product that enhances the ritual of enjoying a natural honey-scented candle.
